attribute NC_GLOBAL instrument_0_description String The piston corer is a type of bottom sediment sampling device. A long, heavy tube is plunged into the seafloor to extract samples of sediment. A piston corer uses a 'free fall' of the coring rig to achieve a greater initial force on impact than gravity coring. A sliding piston inside the core barrel reduces inside wall friction with the sediment and helps to evacuate displaced water from the top of the corer. Coriolis II (Qc, Canada) piston corer is maximum 9m. | Le carottier à piston est un dispositif d'échantillonnage des sédiments. Le carottier à piston est muni d'un poids permettant au carottier de pénétrer dans le sédiment et de récupérer les différentes couches sédimentaires. Le piston présent à l'intérieur du tube permet la réduction des frictions entre le tube et le sédiment et d'extraire plus facilement l'eau vers le dessus du carottier. Le carottier à piston du Coriolis II (Qc, Canada) a un maximum de 9 mètres de longueur.
